Cybersecurity Assessment and Authorization Subject Matter Expert (SME)

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serve as a cybersecurity Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Assessment and Authorization (A&A) of information systems, ensuring compliance with Department of Defense (DoD) cybersecurity policies and procedures.
• Execute Risk Management Framework (RMF) processes for authorizing information systems or advise as an SME during system authorization.
• Apply knowledge of NIST Special Publication 800-53 security controls to support system assessments within complex, large-scale DoD IT infrastructures—including environments like the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) with multiple enclaves, AIS applications, and outsourced IT components.
• Identify vulnerabilities and determine their severity in relation to system authorization status, recommending risk mitigation actions.
• Perform security control assessments and provide technical expertise during authorization reviews.
• Brief senior leadership on system status, risks, and progress through the RMF lifecycle.
• Support and interpret DoD cybersecurity policies, guidance, and procedures for information system security.
• Provide cybersecurity insight related to emerging technologies, including Cloud computing, Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Warehouse Execution Systems (WES), and Operational Technology (OT).
• Collaborate with technical teams and stakeholders to ensure all cybersecurity documentation, control implementation, and assessments are accurately completed and aligned with DoD expectations.
• Maintain documentation and records in accordance with federal and agency-specific cybersecurity compliance standards.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience

   

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with the Risk Management Framework (RMF) and NIST Assessment & Authorization (A&A) processes.
  • Proven experience with DoD cybersecurity programs and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, implement, and validate security controls for large-scale or enterprise-level DoD information systems.
  • Experience supporting authorization processes, including cybersecurity policy development, control implementation, and risk reporting.
  • Familiarity with the cybersecurity challenges and protection strategies for Cloud, ICS, WES, and OT environments.
