Responsibilities & Qualifications

The TekSynap is seeking a Senior System Administrator (Unix/Linux). The Senior Systems Administrator (Unix/Linux) serves as Key Personnel under the NSWCDD Corporate IT Services contract. This position provides advanced system administration and engineering support for Unix/Linux environments within the Navy enterprise. The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for configuration, optimization, and sustainment of critical Navy IT infrastructure systems, ensuring maximum performance, reliability, and compliance with cybersecurity requirements.  

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Install, configure, and maintain Unix/Linux operating systems and associated hardware/software components in a secure DoD environment. 
  • Manage and monitor system performance, availability, and capacity, ensuring optimal uptime for mission-critical systems. 
  • Implement and maintain system backup and recovery procedures in compliance with RMF and DISA STIGs. 
  • Administer user accounts, access controls, and file permissions following DoD cybersecurity policies. 
  • Conduct system patching, updates, and configuration management to maintain system integrity and accreditation. 
  • Provide Tier III troubleshooting and support for complex system issues and coordinate with network and cybersecurity teams for resolution. 
  • Develop and maintain system documentation, architecture diagrams, and baseline configurations. 
  • Participate in system design reviews, accreditation activities, and contingency planning. 
  • Ensure compliance with Navy network protocols, cybersecurity standards, and vulnerability management processes. 
  • Support the integration of new hardware and software solutions, ensuring interoperability and security alignment. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s in CS, IS, Engineering or related field 
  • Minimum of six (6) years of professional experience in Unix and/or Linux system administration of networks and software systems, including system backup and recovery, performance tuning, and hardware/software troubleshooting. 
  • Must meet DoD IAT Level III certification requirements (e.g., Security+ CE, CASP+, CISSP). 
  • Strong experience with TCP/IP, network security tools (e.g., firewalls, vulnerability scanners), system performance tuning, and resource allocation. 
  • Deep understanding of computing and networking vulnerabilities, attack methods, and mitigation techniques.

    • Amount of Travel: 10-15% for support and coordination at other Navy facilities (Dan Neck, Norfolk, Quantico, San Diego).
